Materials
- New brake shoes
- Brake grease
- Brake cleaner
Prepare the Vehicle
1. Park the vehicle on a level surface and apply the parking brake.
2. Loosen the lug nuts on the rear wheels but do not remove them.
3. Raise the rear of the vehicle with the jack and place jack stands under the frame.
4. Remove the lug nuts and wheels.
Remove the Old Brake Shoes
5. Remove the drum retaining screws using a screwdriver or socket wrench.
6. Remove the brake drum by carefully pulling it off of the axle.
7. Use a brake spring tool to remove the brake shoe return springs.
8. Remove the old brake shoes by sliding them off of the backing plate.
Clean the Backing Plate
9. Use a wire brush to clean the backing plate.
10. Apply a thin coat of brake cleaner to the backing plate.
Install the New Brake Shoes
11. Slide the new brake shoes onto the backing plate.
12. Install the brake shoe retaining pins and screws.
13. Install the brake drum.
14. Install the brake drum retaining screws.
15. Lower the vehicle and remove the jack stands.
Test the Brakes
16. Pump the brake pedal until it feels firm.
17. Drive the vehicle slowly and test the brakes.
