How do you bleed the clutch on a 1996 Ford Ranger?

Bleeding the Clutch on a 1996 Ford Ranger

Tools and Materials Needed:

- Brake fluid (DOT 3)

- Clear rubber tubing

- Wrench

- Open-end wrench

- Pliers

- Funnel

Instructions:

1. Park your vehicle on level ground and turn off the engine.

2. Open the hood of your vehicle.

3. Locate the clutch master cylinder. It is usually located on the firewall near the brake master cylinder.

4. Remove the cap from the clutch master cylinder.

5. Attach one end of the transparent rubber hose to the nipple on the bottom of the clutch master cylinder reservoir.

6. The other end of the hose should be placed into a clear container filled with about an inch of brake fluid.

7. Use a crescent wrench to loosen the bleeder screw on the slave cylinder just enough so that the fluid drips out.

8. In the vehicle, have an assistant slowly depress the clutch pedal all the way to the floor and hold it down.

9. While the pedal is depressed, quickly tighten the bleeder screw until the clutch pedal begins to move toward the floor.

10. The assistant should then slowly release the clutch pedal while you watch the fluid level in the reservoir. The fluid should draw down and more air bubbles should be sucked up into the clear tubing.

11. Repeat steps 8-10 until there are no more air bubbles in the line and the fluid level remains consistent in the reservoir with the pedal pushed down.

12. Tighten the bleeder screw securely.

13. Fill the clutch reservoir to the proper level with brake fluid.

14. Replace the cap on the clutch master cylinder.

15. Repeat steps 6-14 two more times to ensure the system is completely bled.

16. Test the clutch pedal to ensure it is firm and responsive.
