How do you replace VW Ghia ignition switch?

Replacing the ignition switch on a VW Ghia involves the following steps:

1. Preparation:

- Gather the necessary tools and replacement ignition switch.

- Disconnect the battery's negative terminal to prevent any electrical accidents.

2. Remove the Steering Wheel:

- Turn the steering wheel to the right as far as it goes.

- Insert the key and turn it to the "ON" position.

- Locate and remove the two screws that secure the airbag module.

- Disconnect the airbag connector and carefully set aside the airbag module.

- Remove the steering wheel nut using a socket wrench.

- Gently pull the steering wheel towards you to remove it from the steering shaft.

3. Remove the Ignition Switch Housing:

- Remove the lower steering column plastic covers using a screwdriver or trim removal tool.

- Locate the two screws holding the ignition switch housing in place and remove them.

- Pull the ignition switch housing towards you to remove it from the steering column.

4. Disconnect Electrical Connectors:

- Disconnect the electrical connectors attached to the ignition switch.

- Make a note of the wiring connections for proper reinstallation.

5. Remove the Ignition Lock Cylinder:

- Insert the key into the ignition switch and turn it to the "ON" position.

- Use a small screwdriver or paperclip to press the lock release button located on the side of the ignition switch.

- Pull the ignition lock cylinder out of the housing.

6. Install the New Ignition Switch:

- Insert the new ignition switch into the housing.

- Align the key slot and ensure that the new switch is properly seated.

- Secure the ignition switch by tightening the screws.

7. Reconnect Electrical Connectors:

- Reconnect the electrical connectors to the new ignition switch according to your notes.

8. Reinstall the Ignition Switch Housing:

- Place the ignition switch housing back onto the steering column.

- Secure it with the two screws you removed earlier.

9. Reinstall the Steering Wheel:

- Align the steering wheel with the steering shaft and gently slide it back into place.

- Tighten the steering wheel nut securely using a socket wrench.

10. Reinstall the Airbag Module:

- Reconnect the airbag connector and place the airbag module back into its housing.

- Secure the airbag module with the screws you removed earlier.

11. Reconnect the Battery:

- Reconnect the negative terminal of the battery.

12. Test the Ignition Switch:

- Turn the key to the "ON" position to ensure that the ignition switch functions correctly.
