How do you replace the speed sensor on a 1999 Mercury Villager?

Tools and Materials Needed:

- Replacement speed sensor

- Flat-head screwdriver

- 10mm socket wrench and ratchet

- Pliers

- Jack

- Jack stands

Step-by-Step Instructions:

1. Turn Off Engine and Raise the Vehicle:

- Allow the engine to cool down completely and turn off the ignition.

- Jack up the front of the vehicle. Be sure to properly place jack stands under the appropriate points for support before getting underneath the vehicle.

2. Locate the Speed Sensor:

- The speed sensor is usually located on the transmission near the wheel. It's a small, cylindrical sensor with a connector attached.

3. Disconnect the Electrical Connector:

- Use a flat-head screwdriver to gently pry open the locking tab of the electrical connector attached to the speed sensor.

- Pull the connector straight out to disconnect it from the sensor.

4. Remove the Speed Sensor:

- Use a 10mm socket wrench to loosen and remove the bolt holding the speed sensor in place.

- Pull the sensor straight out of its housing. Be careful not to drop it.

5. Install the New Speed Sensor:

- Align the new speed sensor with its housing and insert the sensor straight in until it's seated properly.

- Insert the bolt and tighten it securely with the 10mm socket wrench.

6. Reconnect the Electrical Connector:

- Align the connector with the speed sensor and push it in firmly until it locks in place. Make sure the connector is secure.

7. Lower the Vehicle:

- Remove the jack stands and carefully lower the vehicle to the ground.

8. Test the Speed Sensor:

- Start the engine and take a short drive. Your speedometer should now be working correctly.

Remember to consult the service manual for your specific Mercury Villager model for any year- or model-specific instructions or precautions. If you're not comfortable performing this repair, it's best to take the vehicle to a qualified mechanic.
