How to Change the Front Brake Pads on a 2001 Chevrolet S10

Tools and Materials Needed

* Jack and jack stands

* Lug wrench

* Socket set

* Flat-head screwdriver

* C-clamp

* Brake fluid

* New brake pads

Instructions

1. Park the truck on a level surface and engage the parking brake.

2. Loosen the lug nuts on the front wheels, but do not remove them.

3. Jack up the truck and place jack stands under the frame.

4. Remove the lug nuts and take off the front wheels.

5. Locate the brake caliper on the back of the wheel hub. There are two bolts that hold the caliper in place. Remove these bolts and take off the caliper.

6. Remove the old brake pads from the caliper. Be careful not to damage the rotor.

7. Inspect the rotor for damage. If the rotor is damaged, it will need to be replaced.

8. Install the new brake pads in the caliper. Make sure that the pads are seated properly.

9. Reinstall the caliper and tighten the bolts.

10. Put the wheels back on and tighten the lug nuts.

11. Lower the truck and remove the jack stands.

12. Test the brakes by applying pressure to the brake pedal. The pedal should feel firm and the truck should stop smoothly.

Tips

* If you are not comfortable changing brake pads, you can take your truck to a mechanic to have it done.

* Be careful not to get brake fluid on your skin or in your eyes.

* Brake pads can be dusty, so wear safety glasses and a dust mask when changing them.
