Tools and Supplies
- Jack
- Jack stands or ramps
- Wheel chocks
- Lug wrench
- C-clamp or brake caliper tool
- Flat-head screwdriver
- Brake cleaner spray
- New brake pads and rotors (if required)
Procedure:
1. Safety First: Park the vehicle on level ground and apply the parking brake. Engage the wheel chocks on the opposite wheels for added safety.
2. Prepare the Car: Loosen the lug nuts on the wheels where you will replace the brake pads, but don't remove them completely.
3. Raise the Car: Use the jack to lift the side of the vehicle where you'll be working and place the jack stands or ramps underneath for safety.
4. Remove the Wheels: Unscrew and remove the lug nuts, then lift and remove the wheel to expose the brake components.
5. Locate the Brake Caliper: Identify the brake caliper, which houses the brake pads. Some BMW 7 series models may require removing a dust cover to access the caliper.
6. Release the Caliper: Press down on the brake fluid reservoir to compress the brake fluid, which will make it easier to release the caliper. Loosen the caliper bolts and remove them.
7. Remove Old Brake Pads: Slide out the old brake pads from the caliper. Inspect them for wear and replace them if necessary.
8. Check the Rotor: Look at the brake rotor's surface for any damage or wear. Replace it if necessary.
9. Clean the Caliper: Use a flat-head screwdriver and brake cleaner to remove any dirt or residue from the caliper and brake components.
10. Install New Brake Pads: Place the new brake pads into the caliper, ensuring they are positioned correctly.
11. Reinstall the Caliper: Reattach the caliper bolts and tighten them securely.
12. Test the Brakes: Before you lower the vehicle completely, lightly depress the brake pedal a few times to seat the new brake pads.
13. Lower the Car: Use the jack to slowly lower the vehicle and remove the jack stands or ramps.
14. Replace the Wheel: Reinstall the wheel and lug nuts, tightening them in a star pattern until snug.
15. Top-Up Brake Fluid: Check the brake fluid level in the reservoir and top it up if needed.
Important Note: Refer to the specific guidelines and instructions provided in the owner's manual for your BMW 7 series model, as the steps may vary slightly for different years and variants. If you are not confident in your technical skills, it's best to seek assistance from a professional mechanic or an authorized BMW service center.
