Tools Needed:
- Set of wrenches
- Socket set
- Flat-head screwdriver
- Timing light (optional)
Procedure:
1. Park the vehicle and engage the parking brake. Turn off the engine and let it cool down.
2. Locate the distributor. It's typically located at the front of the engine, near the valve cover.
3. Disconnect the battery. This is a safety precaution to avoid any electrical issues while working on the distributor.
4. Remove the spark plug wires. Use the flat-head screwdriver to gently pry off the spark plug wire connectors from the distributor cap.
5. Remove the distributor cap. Use the appropriate wrench to loosen and remove the bolts or screws holding the distributor cap in place.
6. Locate the rotor and points. The rotor is the part that rotates inside the cap and distributes the spark to the spark plugs. The points are the contacts that open and close to create the spark.
7. Remove the old distributor. Use a socket wrench to loosen and remove the bolt that holds the distributor in place. Gently lift and remove the distributor from the engine.
8. Install the new distributor. Carefully insert the new distributor into the engine, aligning the rotor with the points. Secure the distributor with the bolt.
9. Reinstall the distributor cap. Replace the distributor cap and secure it with the appropriate bolts or screws.
10. Reconnect the spark plug wires. Reattach the spark plug wires to the distributor cap, making sure they're connected in the correct firing order.
11. Reconnect the battery. Reconnect the battery cables to the battery terminals.
12. Start the engine. Crank the engine to see if it starts and runs smoothly.
13. Adjust the timing (optional). Use a timing light to check and adjust the timing if necessary.
