Signs When Your Vehicle Needs An Oil Change?

Do you know the signs when your vehicle needs an oil change? Many drivers usually follow the mileage interval when scheduling oil changes. However, there are a few other signs indicating that it’s time for an oil change, such as:

  1. A clogged filter. As oil moves through the engine, it picks up dirt and debris and clogs the oil filter.
  2. Wearing down of engine parts. Dirty oil is thick and abrasive, wearing down the engine parts instead of lubricating, resulting in metal-on-metal friction.
  3. Additives lose effectiveness. The additives in the oil, such as detergents, dispersants, rust-fighters, and friction reducers, will eventually lose their effectiveness.
  4. Engine overheats. As the oil gets thicker and dirtier, it loses its ability to cool the engine, overheating and damaging critical engine components.
  5. Sludge builds up. The volume of dirt and debris can eventually outweigh the actual oil, resulting in a thick, dark, sludge that is unable to lubricate.

So how do you keep your engine healthy? Regular oil changes! Fresh, clean oil will help prevent oil deposits from clogging the lines of the motor. Here are some ways to take care of your engine:

  • Follow the interval schedule for oil changes recommended in your owner’s manual.
  • If you notice increasing problems with hard starting, misfiring, running hot, low oil indicator light, or a faulty oxygen sensor, schedule an inspection of your engine.
  • Use the type of oil recommended in your owner’s manual.
  • Do your research on additives--they may react chemically with your oil and actually cause more bad than good.

A Tip for Drivers: Many auto shops offer oil change coupons to help make regular oil changes affordable for their customers.
