How do you change a riding mower blade?

Changing a riding mower blade is a relatively simple task that can be completed in less than 30 minutes. However, since you will be working with sharps objects it is important you take steps to protect yourself during the process. These steps include:

1. Park your mower on a level surface, turn off the engine and disconnect the spark plug wire. This will help prevent the mower from starting accidentally while you are working.

2. Locate the mower deck. This is the part of the mower that houses the blades. It is usually located under the mower, and it is held in place by a series of bolts.

3. Raise the mower deck. Use the jack or lift mechanism on your mower to raise the mower deck until you have enough room to work. Always chock the wheels to prevent the tractor from rolling while it is elevated.

4. Remove the mower blades. Depending on your model mower you may have one or multiple blades. On most mowers, the blades are held in place by a series of bolts. Remove these bolts to take the blades off. To loosen rusty or stubborn bolts you may need to use a penetrating oil.

5. Inspect the blades. Look for any cracks, bends, or other damage. If a blade is damaged, it should be replaced immediately. It is also a great time to sharpen the mower blades.

6. Install the new blades. Position the new blades on the mower deck and replace the bolts. Make sure that the blades are properly tightened so that they will not come loose while the mower is in operation.

7. Lower the mower deck. Lower the mower deck back down to its original position.

8. Reconnect the spark plug wire. Reconnect the spark plug wire to the spark plug.

9. Start the mower and test the blades. Start the mower and let it run for a few minutes. Listen for any unusual noises. If you hear anything strange, stop the mower and inspect the blades to make sure they are properly installed.

Here are some additional tips for changing riding mower blades:

- Wear gloves and safety glasses to protect yourself from sharp edges.

- Be careful not to drop the mower blades on your foot.

- If you are uncomfortable changing the blades yourself, you can take the mower to a qualified repair shop.
