* Bodily injury to a person who, as a result of the crash, receives medical treatment away from the scene of the crash.
* Damage to the commercial motor vehicle or other property (excluding cargo) of at least $1,000.
The FMCSA requires carriers to maintain records of all DOT recordable accidents. These records must be kept for at least 3 years and must be made available to the FMCSA upon request.
Here are some examples of DOT recordable accidents:
* A truck driver crashes into a car, causing the driver of the car to be taken to the hospital for treatment.
* A truck driver runs off the road and hits a tree, causing damage to the truck of at least $1,000.
* A truck driver sideswipes another vehicle, causing damage to both vehicles of at least $1,000.
It is important to note that not all vehicle crashes involving commercial motor vehicles are DOT recordable accidents. For example, a minor fender bender that does not result in any bodily injury or property damage over $1,000 would not be considered a DOT recordable accident.
