1. Gather the necessary tools and parts.
- New distributor plug
- Socket wrench set
- Phillips head screwdriver
- Flat head screwdriver
- Pliers
- Engine coolant (if necessary)
2. Prepare the car.
- Turn off the engine and allow it to cool down.
- Disconnect the battery's negative terminal.
- Remove the air cleaner housing.
- Remove the thermostat cover.
- Remove the throttle linkage.
- Remove the radiator hose that connects to the distributor cap and water pump.
- Drain the engine coolant, if necessary.
3. Remove the old distributor plug.
- Use the socket wrench to remove the nuts holding the distributor cap in place.
- Remove the distributor cap.
- Using the flathead screwdriver, remove the small screws holding the distributor rotor in place.
- Remove the rotor.
- Use the pliers to remove the old distributor plug.
4. Install the new distributor plug.
- Apply a thin coat of sealant to the new distributor plug.
- Insert the new distributor plug into the distributor.
- Align the new plug with the old plug wire.
- Secure with the retaining ring.
- Replace the distributor rotor.
- Replace the distributor cap.
- Tighten the nuts holding the distributor cap in place.
5. Refill the engine coolant, if necessary.
- Reconnect the battery's negative terminal.
- Reinstall the air cleaner housing, thermostat cover, and throttle linkage.
- Reinstall the radiator hose.
6. Start the engine and check for leaks.
- Start the engine and allow it to warm up to operating temperature.
- Check for leaks around the distributor plug and the radiator hose.
- If there are any leaks, tighten the connections or replace the gaskets as needed.
