Caution: Make sure the engine is cool, the car is in park, and the parking brake is engaged before starting.
1. Disconnect the Battery: Disconnect the battery's negative terminal by loosening the bolt or nut holding the cable in place.
2. Locate the Starter: On the 750iL, the starter is mounted on the driver's side of the engine, near the bottom.
3. Remove the Air Intake Hose: To access the starter, you'll likely need to remove the air intake hose. Loosen the clamps or bolts securing the hose to the throttle body and air filter box, then carefully remove the hose.
4. Disconnect the Starter Wiring: There will be two electrical connectors attached to the starter. Remove the covers from the connectors, press down on the release tabs, and gently pull the connectors off.
5. Remove the Starter Bolts: There are usually two or three bolts holding the starter in place. Use a ratchet or wrench to loosen and remove these bolts.
6. Remove the Starter: Once the bolts are removed, you can carefully remove the starter from the engine compartment. Be careful not to drop any of the mounting hardware.
7. Inspect the Starter: Before installing the new starter, inspect the old one for any signs of damage, such as worn brushes, damaged wiring, or overheating.
8. Install the New Starter: Place the new starter into position, aligning it with the mounting holes. Secure it using the bolts you removed earlier.
9. Reconnect the Starter Wiring: Reconnect the electrical connectors to the starter. Ensure they are securely seated and click into place.
10. Reattach the Air Intake Hose: If you removed the air intake hose, reattach it by connecting it to the throttle body and air filter box. Tighten the clamps or bolts to secure it.
11. Reconnect the Battery: Reconnect the negative battery terminal by tightening the bolt or nut you loosened in step 1.
Test the starter by turning the key in the ignition. If it cranks properly, the starter replacement was successful.
