Tools and Materials:
- 10 mm, 13 mm, and 15 mm wrenches
- 10 mm and 13 mm sockets and ratchet
- Flat-head screwdriver
- Wire brush
- New starter
Instructions:
1. Disconnect the Battery:
- Disconnect the negative battery terminal to ensure the electrical system is turned off.
2. Remove the Air Filter:
- Unscrew the wing nut holding the air filter cover.
- Lift off the air filter cover.
3. Remove the Tin Shield:
- Remove the two 10 mm bolts holding the tin shield above the starter.
- Lift off the tin shield.
4. Disconnect the Starter Cables:
- Locate the two starter cables connected to the starter solenoid.
- Use a 13 mm wrench to loosen and remove the nuts securing the cables.
- Label the cables for correct reinstallation.
5. Remove the Starter:
- Use a 15 mm wrench to loosen the nut securing the starter to the transmission bell housing.
- Remove the nut and bolt holding the starter.
- Gently pry the starter out of its position using a flat-head screwdriver if needed.
6. Clean the Mounting Surface:
- Use a wire brush to clean the starter mounting surface on the transmission bell housing.
- Remove any dirt or corrosion.
7. Install the New Starter:
- Place the new starter into position.
- Secure the starter with the nut and bolt from the previous step.
- Tighten the nut securely.
8. Reconnect the Starter Cables:
- Reconnect the starter cables to the starter solenoid terminals.
- Use a 13 mm wrench to tighten the nuts until they are snug.
- Recheck and ensure the cables are labeled correctly.
9. Reinstall the Tin Shield:
- Replace the tin shield and secure it using the two 10 mm bolts removed earlier.
10. Reinstall the Air Filter:
- Place the air filter cover back into place and secure it with the wing nut.
11. Reconnect the Battery:
- Reconnect the negative battery terminal.
12. Test the Starter:
- Turn the key in the ignition to start the engine. The engine should crank over normally.
13. Test Drive:
- Take your Beetle for a test drive to ensure the starter is functioning properly.
