1. Gather Tools and Materials:
Ensure you have all the necessary tools and materials:
- Replacement windscreen
- Windscreen adhesive (urethane)
- Primer for the windscreen adhesive
- Razor blade or glass scraper
- Trim removal tools
- Suction cup or windscreen removal tool
- New moulding tape (if required)
- Utility Knife
- Masking tape
2. Safety First:
Put on safety glasses and gloves to protect yourself during the process.
3. Remove Windscreen Mouldings:
Use trim removal tools to carefully remove the windscreen mouldings around the edges of the existing windscreen.
4. Cut Through Adhesive:
Gently insert a razor blade or glass scraper between the windscreen and the body of the car, cutting through the old adhesive. Avoid damaging the paintwork.
5. Separate Windscreen:
Use a suction cup or a specialized tool to lift and separate the old windscreen from the frame, being cautious not to shatter the glass.
6. Clean and Prepare the Surface:
Use a razor blade and solvents to thoroughly clean and remove any old adhesive residue from the windscreen frame.
7. Apply Primer (If Needed):
Some windscreens may require a primer to be applied to the contact areas before installing the new windscreen.
8. Apply Windscreen Adhesive:
Apply a continuous and even bead of windscreen adhesive onto the frame where the windscreen will be seated.
9. Position New Windscreen:
Carefully position the new windscreen onto the frame, aligning it properly. Gently press the windscreen into place to bond it with the adhesive.
10. Clamp or Tape in Place:
Use clamps or masking tape to hold the windscreen in position until the adhesive cures and sets.
11. Install Windscreen Mouldings:
Once the adhesive has cured (typically within a few hours or overnight), replace the windscreen mouldings in their proper positions.
12. Clean and Inspect:
Clean the exterior and interior surfaces of the windscreen, inspecting for proper adhesion, alignment, and functionality.
Note:
The exact procedure and adhesive recommended may vary based on the type of vehicle, windscreen, and manufacturer guidelines. It's advisable to consult the vehicle manufacturer's manual or seek professional assistance if you are not confident in performing this task on your own.
