- Remove the front passenger floor cover to access the alternator and related components.
3. Loosen the Fan Belt:
- Loosen the fan belt by using an adjustable wrench to turn the alternator adjusting screw counterclockwise.
- Remove the fan belt by lifting it off the pulleys.
4. Disconnect Electrical Connections:
- Label and disconnect the electrical connectors leading to the alternator, including the large positive power wire, the small field wire, and the warning light wire.
- Make sure to set these wires aside to prevent any confusion during reinstallation.
5. Unbolt the Alternator:
- Remove the two bolts that hold the alternator in place.
- Support the alternator with one hand while removing the last bolt. Be careful not to drop it.
6. Remove the Alternator:
- Carefully remove the alternator by pulling it out from the engine compartment.
- Remove any spacers or shims that may be present behind the alternator to avoid misalignment during reinstallation.
7. Replace the Alternator:
- Position the new alternator into place, making sure to install any spacers or shims that were previously removed.
- Reinsert the bolts to hold the alternator in place, but don't tighten them completely yet.
8. Reconnect Electrical Connections:
- Reattach the electrical connectors to the appropriate terminals on the alternator, ensuring proper alignment.
9. Adjust Fan Belt Tension:
- Reinstall the fan belt over the pulleys and adjust its tension using the alternator adjustment screw.
- The belt should be tight enough to prevent slipping but not too tight to create excessive strain.
10. Test the Alternator:
- Reconnect the battery negative terminal and start the vehicle.
- Turn on the headlights and other electrical accessories to check if the alternator is charging the battery properly.
- Measure the voltage across the battery terminals with a voltmeter to ensure it's within the recommended range.
11. Tighten the Bolts:
- Once the alternator is functioning correctly, tighten the alternator mounting bolts securely.
12. Replace the Protective Covers:
- Reinstall the front passenger floor cover to complete the procedure.
