Why wont my Peugeot 406 headlights come on automatically?

Possible causes:

- Faulty light sensor. The light sensor on the Peugeot 406 is responsible for detecting changes in ambient light and triggering the automatic headlights. If the sensor is faulty or misaligned, it may not be able to accurately detect darkness and will therefore not turn on the headlights automatically.

- Damaged wiring. The wiring that connects the light sensor to the automatic headlight control module may be damaged, preventing the signal from the sensor from reaching the module.

- Faulty automatic headlight control module. The automatic headlight control module is responsible for receiving the signal from the light sensor and triggering the headlights. If the module is faulty, it may not be able to receive the signal from the sensor or may be unable to turn on the headlights.

- Settings Some Peugeot models have an option that allows the automatic headlight function to be disabled from within the vehicle settings menu. Ensure that this option is not activated.

- Other electrical issues: Other electrical problems within the vehicle, such as a weak battery or alternator, may prevent the automatic headlights from functioning correctly.

Solution

- If you suspect that the light sensor is the issue, check that the sensor is clean and properly aligned. If the sensor is dirty or misaligned, clean it with a soft, dry cloth and ensure it is positioned according to the manufacturer's specifications.

- Test the light sensor by activating it manually. Most Peugeot 406 models have a switch to turn on the headlights or a light switch that cycles through different lighting modes (auto, daytime, and nighttime) on the dashboard. With the headlights set to auto, cover and uncover the light sensor to check if the headlights come on and turn off when it's dark and light, respectively.

-If you suspect that the wiring is damaged, inspect the wiring for any damage or corrosion. If any damaged wires are found, repair or replace them.

- If you suspect that the automatic headlight control module is faulty, you may need to have the module replaced.

- If the root cause is not immediately obvious from these actions, you may need to take your vehicle to a mechanic or an auto repair shop specializing in Peugeot vehicles. They will be able to diagnose the problem and perform the necessary repairs.
