What is the height and weight recommended for kids to sit in front seat of a car?

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), children should ride in a rear-facing car seat until they reach the highest weight or height allowed by their car seat. Once a child outgrows their rear-facing car seat, they should transition to a forward-facing car seat with a harness. Children should remain in a forward-facing car seat with a harness until they reach the highest weight or height allowed by their car seat.

After your child reaches the highest weight or height allowed by their forward-facing car seat with a harness, they can transition to a belt-positioning booster seat:

* The lap belt should fit low and snug across your child's hips, not across the belly.

* The shoulder belt should come across the center of your child's shoulder, not across the neck or face.

* Children should ride in a belt-positioning booster seat until they reach 4 feet 9 inches tall.

Children who are 4 feet 9 inches tall and older can sit in the front seat of a car if:

* They can sit all the way back against the seat

* They can bend their knees 90 degrees over the edge of the seat

* Their feet can reach the floor comfortably

Children should not sit in the front seat of a car if they:

* Are under 12 years old

* Weigh less than 80 pounds

* Are shorter than 4 feet 9 inches tall

* Cannot meet the belt-positioning criteria listed above

It is important to note that the NHTSA recommends that children ride in the back seat of the car until they are 13 years old.
