Several reasons could trigger the ABS INOP light:
* Low brake fluid: The most common and easiest to check. Low fluid could indicate a leak somewhere in the brake system.
* Faulty ABS sensor: These sensors monitor wheel speed. A faulty sensor, damaged wiring to a sensor, or even just dirt or corrosion on the sensor can cause the light to illuminate. There are four sensors, one for each wheel.
* Faulty ABS module (Hydraulic Control Unit): This is the "brain" of the ABS system. A failing module is a more serious and expensive problem.
* Faulty ABS pump relay: This component may be faulty.
* Wiring issues: Damaged, corroded, or loose wiring anywhere in the ABS system can cause problems.
* Faulty wheel speed sensor ring: The sensor ring is a toothed ring on the wheel hub that the sensor reads to determine speed. Damage or corrosion to this ring will cause issues.
What to do:
1. Check your brake fluid level: This is the first and easiest step. If it's low, find and fix the leak immediately. A low level is a serious safety concern even without ABS failure.
2. Have the system professionally diagnosed: Taking your Camaro to a mechanic specializing in ABS systems or a trusted auto repair shop is the best way to pinpoint the problem. They have the tools and expertise to diagnose the fault code(s) stored in the ABS module's computer, which will indicate the exact problem. Ignoring the light could lead to further damage or a more costly repair later.
Don't attempt to repair the ABS system yourself unless you have significant automotive electrical and brake system experience. Improper repair can compromise your braking system and create dangerous conditions.
