What year did car companies not make cars in the 1940s?

Car companies didn't make cars for civilian use in the United States during most of the 1942-1945 period due to World War II. Production was converted to support the war effort. While some limited production might have occurred for military use, the vast majority of auto plants were not building passenger cars for the public during those years.
