The air filter on a 2001 Chevy Cavalier is located in a plastic housing, typically situated on top of the engine, near the throttle body. To be more precise, you'll need to look at the passenger side (right side when sitting in the driver's seat) of the engine bay. The air filter housing is usually a fairly large, rectangular or trapezoidal black plastic box. You'll likely see a couple of clips or screws holding the top portion of the housing closed.
