No, the front axle on a 1980 4WD Suburban does *not* pull through the steering knuckle. The steering knuckle is attached to the axle via kingpins (or, less likely on some later-year models, ball joints) The axle shafts rotate *within* the knuckles. The entire assembly rotates around the kingpins (or ball joints) to steer. The axle itself is a fixed assembly and doesn't "pull through" anything.
