The Z-series has spanned 6 generations and more than 50 years of constant production, with varying success. The Z-cars are typically based on the Nissan FM platform and tend to be two-door sports car with a front engine/rear wheel drive layout.
Nissan started the Z-series in the late 1960s to compete in the American sports car market.
Since the release of the first generation Datsun 240Z in the fall of 1969, the Z-car has been through several design changes and updates, but has remained consistently a performance-oriented, affordable GT sports car. As a result, the "Z" nameplate has become closely associated with the automotive culture and with Japanese sports cars in general, having become a popular collector car and a frequent tuning and racing platform.
