When was cars invented?

The first modern self-propelled car was built by Karl Benz in 1885 in Mannheim, Germany. It was a three-wheeled vehicle with a single-cylinder engine. However, the date generally accepted as the birth of the modern automobile is 1886, when Gottlieb Daimler and Wilhelm Maybach, also working in Germany, invented a four-wheeled car powered by an internal combustion engine.
