Renault ZOE sells almost as much as the Clio in Europe

Last month the all-electric supermini ZOE was Renault’s second best selling car, only a little behind the extremely popular Clio. The sales of the Renault Twingo ZE are also getting very close to its gas counterpart.

Let’s see how many units were sold by Renault to private buyers in Europe last month.

December sales in Europe

  • Clio: 20.404
  • ZOE: 16.035 (all-electric)
  • Twingo: 4.723
  • Twingo ZE: 3.343 (all-electric)

At the moment, Renault seems to be the legacy automaker that is making the best transition to electric cars in Europe, by having good electric alternatives to its most popular ICE (Internal Combustion Engine) cars.

Another important reason for success is the fact that electric cars sold by Renault currently have the lowest delivery times in Europe.

Anyway, I think that it’s possible that during this year the Renault Twingo will have more units sold of its electric version than the ICE. Moreover, with the new generation set to arrive already next year – likely with more range, faster charging and lower price -, the ICE version will probably be discontinued and the Renault Twingo will become electric only.

As for the ZOE, it’s still much more expensive than the Clio in countries without government subsidies to buy electric cars, so it might take a while until it’s ready to completely replace its dirty sibling.

Regarding other legacy automakers in Europe, I think that they need to bet more on electric superminis like the Renault ZOE, instead of bigger, heavier and more expensive models.

The first automaker to sell a well-made electric supermini with a WLTP range of at least 300 km and a price close to 20.000 euros before subsidies in Europe, will dominate the market. Something that MG is aiming to do already this year…

Will MG successfully deliver a good alternative to the best selling electric car in Europe?
