1. Disconnect the battery:
- Disconnect the negative terminal of the battery to ensure the vehicle is completely depowered and prevent accidental electrical shock.
2. Remove the steering wheel:
- Turn the steering wheel until the BMW logo is positioned straight up.
- Use a Torx screwdriver (T30) to remove the two screws located at the back of the steering wheel airbag module.
- Disconnect the airbag connector by carefully pressing the locking tabs and pulling the connector straight out.
- Use a 17mm socket to remove the steering wheel bolt.
- While pulling firmly on the steering wheel, gently turn it back and forth until it comes off the steering column.
3. Remove the ignition switch housing:
- Locate the ignition switch housing, which is the silver-colored housing around the ignition switch.
- Use a Torx screwdriver (T25) to remove the two screws securing the ignition switch housing.

- Once the ignition switch housing is removed, you'll see the electrical connector for the ignition switch.
- Press down on the locking tab of the connector and gently pull it straight out to disconnect it.
5. Remove the ignition switch:
- The ignition switch is held in place by a snap ring. Use snap ring pliers to compress and remove the snap ring.
- Once the snap ring is removed, you can now take out the ignition switch.
