To check the automatic transmission fluid level in a 2002 Chevrolet Cavalier:
- Park the vehicle on level ground and set the parking brake.
- Start the engine and let it run for a few minutes to bring the transmission to operating temperature.
- Shift the transmission through all gears, pausing in each gear for a few seconds, then return it to Park.
- Locate the transmission fluid dipstick. In most Chevrolet Cavaliers, it is on the driver's side of the engine bay, near the back.
- Pull the dipstick out and wipe it clean using a clean rag or paper towel.
- Reinsert the dipstick into the transmission fluid tube until it is fully seated. Do not tighten it.
- Pull the dipstick out again and check the fluid level. It should be between the "Full" and "Add" marks on the dipstick.
- If the fluid level is low, add enough automatic transmission fluid to bring it up to the "Full" mark. Use the type of fluid recommended by the vehicle owner's manual.
- Reinsert the dipstick and recheck the fluid level.
- Replace the dipstick and close the hood of the vehicle.
