How do you check the automatic transmission fluid level in a 2002 Chevy Cavalier?

To check the automatic transmission fluid level in a 2002 Chevrolet Cavalier:

  1. Park the vehicle on level ground and set the parking brake.
  2. Start the engine and let it run for a few minutes to bring the transmission to operating temperature.
  3. Shift the transmission through all gears, pausing in each gear for a few seconds, then return it to Park.
  4. Locate the transmission fluid dipstick. In most Chevrolet Cavaliers, it is on the driver's side of the engine bay, near the back.
  5. Pull the dipstick out and wipe it clean using a clean rag or paper towel.
  6. Reinsert the dipstick into the transmission fluid tube until it is fully seated. Do not tighten it.
  7. Pull the dipstick out again and check the fluid level. It should be between the "Full" and "Add" marks on the dipstick.
  8. If the fluid level is low, add enough automatic transmission fluid to bring it up to the "Full" mark. Use the type of fluid recommended by the vehicle owner's manual.
  9. Reinsert the dipstick and recheck the fluid level.
  10. Replace the dipstick and close the hood of the vehicle.
