- Spark plug socket (5/8-inch)
- Extension bar
- Torque wrench
- Spark plug gap tool (0.045 inches)
Instructions:
1. Locate the spark plugs. They are located on the top of the engine, under the ignition coils. There are six spark plugs in total, three on each side of the engine.
2. Remove the ignition coil bolts. There is one bolt per ignition coil. Use the socket and extension bar to loosen the bolts and then remove them by hand.
3. Remove the ignition coils. Once the bolts are removed, you can pull the ignition coils straight up out of the engine. Be careful not to drop the ignition coils, as they are fragile and expensive.
4. Remove the spark plugs. Use the spark plug socket to loosen the spark plugs and then remove them by hand.
5. Check the spark plugs. Inspect the spark plugs for wear and damage. The spark plug should be light brown in color and have a sharp, pointed tip. If the spark plug is black or oily, it is time to replace it.
6. Gap the new spark plugs. Use the spark plug gap tool to set the gap between the center electrode and the ground electrode. The gap should be 0.045 inches.
7. Install the new spark plugs. Thread the new spark plugs into the engine by hand and then tighten them with the spark plug socket. Tighten the spark plugs to 18 foot-pounds (24 Nm).
8. Reinstall the ignition coils. Place the ignition coils back into the engine and secure them with the bolts that you removed earlier.
9. Start the engine. Once all of the spark plugs are installed and the ignition coils are connected, start the engine and let it run for a few minutes.
That is how to change spark plugs on a 2006 Chevy Malibu 3.5 V6.
