How do you change the heater core in a 1986 Pontiac Parisienne?

1986 Pontiac Parisienne heater core replacement

Tools Needed:

+ Phillips and/or flat-head screwdriver

+ Socket wrench set (1/4 and 3/8-inch)

+ Pliers

+ Drain pan

+ Container to hold heater core fluid.

Parts Needed:

+ Heater core (factory size or your preference)

+ Heater core O-rings (factory size or your preference)

+ Thermostat (factory size or your preference)

+ Water pump gasket

+ Coolant (type and amount as specified in your vehicle's service manual)

Instructions:

1. Prepare your vehicle:

- Allow your vehicle's engine to cool completely to avoid touching any hot surfaces.

- If your cooling system is hot, never open the radiator cap - instead, let it cool slowly to prevent steam burns.

- Engage the parking brake and make sure the vehicle is secure before getting underneath it.

2. Drain the coolant:

- Locate the radiator drain plug and place a drain pan underneath it.

- Open the radiator drain plug to allow the coolant to drain into the pan.

- Allow the coolant to drain fully before proceeding.

3. Remove the heater hoses:

- Disconnect the heater core inlet and outlet hoses from the engine.

- Use pliers or a wrench if needed to loosen clamps or hose fittings securing the hoses.

- Discard old hoses if not reusing them.

4. Remove the heater core cover:

- Inside the vehicle, locate the heater core cover, usually located beneath the passenger side of the dashboard.

- Remove the screws or clips holding the heater core cover in place to access the heater core.

5. Remove the old heater core:

- Slide out the old heater core from its housing.

- Be careful not to spill any remaining heater core fluid.

- Discard the old heater core.

6. Install the new heater core:

- Position the new heater core into the housing.

- Make sure to correctly align the inlet and outlet ports.

- Secure the heater core in place by snapping it in or reinstalling any mounting screws or brackets that were removed when taking out the old heater core.

7. Replace the heater core cover:

- Reattach the heater core cover removed earlier.

- Make sure to align and secure it properly.

8. Replace the heater core hoses:

- If reusing old hoses, inspect them for cracks or deterioration and replace if needed.

- Connect the heater core inlet and outlet hoses to their respective ports on the engine.

- Make sure the hoses are properly seated and secure.

9. Refill the coolant system:

- Remove the radiator cap and slowly add the recommended amount of coolant.

- Refer to your vehicle's service manual for specific coolant type and capacity information.

- Replace the radiator cap securely once the coolant is filled.

10. Run the engine and check for leaks:

- Allow the engine to run for a few minutes to allow the air pockets in the cooling system to bleed out.

- Look for any leaks around the heater hoses or the heater core. If you notice any leaks, tighten connections until the leak is fixed.

Remember to dispose of used coolant responsibly and follow safety precautions when handling coolants and working around the vehicle's engine and cooling system. If you are not confident performing the heater core replacement yourself, it's best to consult with a qualified mechanic or auto repair shop.
