Can you get a ticket for hitting car in private parking lot?

In general, you cannot be ticketed by the police for hitting a parked car in a private parking lot. However, there are caveats:

- If there is extensive damage to the parked car, the incident may be investigated by the police as a "hit and run" because it is illegal to leave a scene if property damage exceeds a certain amount (it varies from state to state, but is usually in the hundreds of dollars).

- If you cause damage to a car but do not have a valid driver's license, insurance, registration, or tags, the police may issue a citation.

- If you caused the accident while intoxicated, the police will probably arrest you.
