1. Gather the necessary tools and materials, including:
- A drain pan
- A funnel
- A 3/8-inch ratchet and socket set
- A torque wrench
- New transmission fluid (ATF+4)
2. Prepare your vehicle by:
- Parking it on a level surface.
- Turning off the engine and allowing it to cool down.
- Engaging the parking brake.
- Raising the vehicle with a jack and jack stands.
3. Locate the torque converter drain plug, which is located on the bottom of the transmission pan. It is usually a 17mm bolt.
4. Place the drain pan under the drain plug and remove the plug using the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket set.
5. Allow the old transmission fluid to drain completely into the pan. This may take several minutes.
6. Once the old fluid has drained, replace the drain plug and tighten it to 18 ft-lb using the torque wrench.
7. Lower the vehicle and remove the jack and jack stands.
8. Add new transmission fluid to the transmission through the dipstick tube using the funnel. Add the amount of fluid specified in the owner's manual.
9. Start the engine and allow it to run for a few minutes.
10. Check the transmission fluid level and add more fluid if necessary.
That's it! You have now successfully drained the torque converter in your 1998 Dodge Neon.
