Step 1 - Prepare your vehicle.
You will need:
- A pair of gloves
- Safety glasses
- A wrench or ratchet set
Step 2 - Locate the battery.
Depending on the make and model of your vehicle, the battery will be located in one of the following places:
- Under the hood, in the engine compartment
- In the trunk
- Under the backseat
Step 3 - Disconnect the negative terminal.
Once you have located the battery, you will need to disconnect the negative terminal.
- The negative terminal is marked with a minus sign (-) or is black.
- Use the wrench or ratchet to loosen the nut or bolt that holds the negative terminal cable to the battery.
- Be careful not to touch the positive terminal with the wrench or your hands, as this could cause a spark.
- Lift off the negative terminal from the battery.
Step 4 - Disconnect the positive terminal.
- Use the wrench or ratchet to loosen the nut or bolt that holds the positive terminal cable to the battery.
- Be careful not to touch the negative terminal with the wrench or your hands, as this could cause a spark.
- Lift off the positive terminal from the battery.
Step 5 - Reconnect the terminals in reverse order.
When you are ready to reconnect the battery, you will need to do so in reverse order:
- Connect the positive terminal to the battery first.
- Then, connect the negative terminal.
Be careful not to touch the positive and negative terminals together, as this could cause a spark.
