1. Gather Necessary Tools:
- Spark plugs (new ones compatible with your Subaru model)
- Spark plug wrench
- Gapping tool (if necessary)
- Socket wrench
- Extension bar
- Rag or shop towel
2. Disconnect the Battery:
- For safety, it is recommended to disconnect the battery before working on electrical components.
3. Remove the Ignition Coils:
- On most Subaru models, the ignition coils sit on top of the spark plugs.
- Locate the ignition coils and remove the electrical connectors by gently pulling them upward.
- Use a socket wrench to loosen and remove the bolts securing the ignition coils.
- Carefully lift off the ignition coils.
4. Check Spark Plugs:
- Before removing the old spark plugs, inspect their condition.
- Look for signs of excessive wear, damage, or deposits.
5. Remove the Old Spark Plugs:
- Use a spark plug wrench or socket wrench with an extension bar to loosen and remove the old spark plugs.
- Be careful not to drop the removed spark plugs.
6. Gap New Spark Plugs (if necessary):
- Some spark plugs might require gapping to the recommended specification.
- Check the manufacturer's specifications for the correct gap. Use the gapping tool to adjust if needed.
7. Install New Spark Plugs:
- Hand-tighten the new spark plugs until snug.
- Then use the spark plug wrench or socket wrench to tighten the spark plugs further, following the recommended tightening torque.
- Be careful not to over-tighten, as this can damage the spark plugs or the engine.
8. Reinstall Ignition Coils:
- Place the ignition coils back over the spark plugs.
- Secure them using the bolts removed earlier.
- Reconnect the electrical connectors that were previously removed.
9. Reconnect the Battery:
- If the battery was disconnected, reconnect it now.
10. Start the Engine:
- Attempt to start the engine to check if the spark plugs are functioning correctly.
Remember that the process of changing spark plugs may vary slightly based on your Subaru model and specific engine. It's always a good idea to consult your vehicle's owner's manual or service guide for specific instructions and torque specifications for your vehicle.
