Why does a car need transmission fluid?

Automatic Transmissions:

1. Lubrication: Transmission fluid reduces friction and wear between the moving parts of an automatic transmission, such as gears, bearings, and clutches. It helps to keep these components functioning smoothly and extends their lifespan.

2. Heat Transfer: Transmission fluid absorbs heat generated by the transmission's moving parts and carries it away to the transmission cooler. This helps to maintain the proper operating temperature of the transmission and prevent overheating.

3. Hydraulic Pressure: In automatic transmissions, transmission fluid is used to create hydraulic pressure that engages and disengages the transmission's clutches and bands. This pressure is necessary for shifting gears and controlling the transmission's operation.

4. Anti-foaming Agents: Transmission fluid contains additives that prevent foaming, which can cause problems with hydraulic pressure and proper transmission operation.

Manual Transmissions:

While manual transmissions do not require transmission fluid in the same way that automatic transmissions do, some manual transmission vehicles may use a specific type of gear oil or transmission fluid to lubricate the gears and bearings within the transmission. This fluid helps to reduce friction and wear, and maintain proper operating temperatures.
