What is an interference motor?

An interference engine is a type of internal combustion engine where the valves can interfere with the pistons if the timing of the engine is incorrect. This means that the piston can hit the open valve causing damage to both the piston and the valve.

Interference engines are often used in high-performance engines because they can squeeze more air and fuel into the combustion chamber. This provides better fuel efficiency and more power. However, interference engines are also more complex and expensive to build.

In comparison, a non-interference engine has enough piston to valve clearance even when the valve timing is incorrect. Because of this, the piston will never hit an open valve. This makes non-interference engines more durable, reliable, and less likely to cause damage.

Most modern engines are interference engines, but there are still some non-interference engines on the market. If you are unsure of whether an engine is an interference engine, you should consult the owner's manual or contact the manufacturer.
