What is a brake booster?

A brake booster, also known as a vacuum booster or power brake booster, is a device in a vehicle's braking system that multiplies the force applied to the brake pedal, making it easier for the driver to stop the vehicle. It uses either engine vacuum or an electric motor to assist the driver's effort.

Essentially, it acts as a force multiplier. The driver applies relatively little force to the brake pedal, and the booster significantly increases that force to actuate the brake calipers or wheel cylinders, resulting in stronger and more effective braking. Without a brake booster, stopping a car, especially a larger one, would require significantly more effort from the driver.
