Can the knock sensor disable engine of a 98 Mazda millenia?

A faulty knock sensor in a 1998 Mazda Millenia can't directly *disable* the engine in the sense of completely shutting it off. However, a malfunctioning knock sensor can cause the engine control unit (ECU) to drastically alter engine timing and fuel delivery to protect the engine from damage caused by detonation (knocking). This can lead to:

* Severe power loss: The engine will run, but very poorly, lacking power and possibly running rough.

* Limp mode: The ECU might enter a "limp mode," restricting performance to prevent further damage. This might feel like a significant power reduction or even a stumbling engine.

* Check engine light illumination: A malfunctioning knock sensor will almost certainly trigger a check engine light, storing a diagnostic trouble code (DTC) that can be read with an OBD-II scanner.

While the engine won't completely shut off, the severe limitations imposed by a faulty knock sensor can make the car essentially undriveable. The resulting poor performance is essentially a protective measure to avoid catastrophic engine damage. Therefore, while not a direct disable, it effectively renders the engine unusable until the sensor is replaced.
