* Severe power loss: The engine will run, but very poorly, lacking power and possibly running rough.
* Limp mode: The ECU might enter a "limp mode," restricting performance to prevent further damage. This might feel like a significant power reduction or even a stumbling engine.
* Check engine light illumination: A malfunctioning knock sensor will almost certainly trigger a check engine light, storing a diagnostic trouble code (DTC) that can be read with an OBD-II scanner.
While the engine won't completely shut off, the severe limitations imposed by a faulty knock sensor can make the car essentially undriveable. The resulting poor performance is essentially a protective measure to avoid catastrophic engine damage. Therefore, while not a direct disable, it effectively renders the engine unusable until the sensor is replaced.
