Keep in mind:
* Engine Temperature: Oil pressure will be higher when the engine is cold and will drop as it warms up. A reading should be taken after the engine has reached normal operating temperature.
* Oil Viscosity: Using the incorrect oil viscosity (weight) will affect the pressure reading. Always use the oil weight recommended in your owner's manual.
* Engine Wear: Higher mileage engines with significant wear may show lower oil pressure than newer engines.
If your oil pressure is consistently below 10 PSI at idle, even after the engine is warmed up, it's crucial to investigate the cause. Low oil pressure can lead to serious engine damage. Possible causes include low oil level, worn bearings, a failing oil pump, or a clogged oil filter or pickup screen.
