How do you set the timing on a 2001 Ford Ranger With 2.3 liter engine?

To set the timing on a 2001 Ford Ranger with a 2.3-liter engine, you will need the following tools:

* Timing light

* Socket wrench set

* Feeler gauge

* Screwdriver

* New timing belt (if needed)

Instructions

1. Disconnect the negative battery terminal.

2. Remove the air cleaner housing.

3. Locate the timing marks on the crankshaft pulley and the camshaft sprocket. The crankshaft pulley will have a "0" mark, and the camshaft sprocket will have a "T" mark.

4. Turn the crankshaft pulley until the "0" mark is aligned with the pointer on the timing cover.

5. Insert a feeler gauge between the camshaft sprocket and the timing belt. The gap should be .016-.022 inches.

6. If the gap is not within specification, loosen the bolts holding the camshaft sprocket in place and turn the sprocket until the gap is correct. Tighten the bolts securely.

7. Reinstall the air cleaner housing and the negative battery terminal.

8. Start the engine and check the timing with a timing light. The timing marks on the crankshaft pulley should be aligned with the pointer on the timing cover.

Tips

* If you are replacing the timing belt, it is important to also replace the timing belt tensioner and idler pulley.

* Be sure to follow the torque specifications for all bolts and nuts.

* If you are not comfortable performing this procedure, it is best to have it done by a qualified mechanic.
