How do you change thermostat in1996 2.4 liter grand am gt?

Tools Needed:

- New thermostat (OEM or equivalent)

- Thermostat gasket

- New bottle of 50/50 coolant mixture (if draining & refilling coolant)

- Funnel

- 5/8-inch wrench

- Screwdriver

- Replacement coolant/antifreeze, if necessary

Procedure:

1. Make sure the engine is cool. If it is not, let it cool to a safe temperature. Then, open the hood.

2. Locate the thermostat housing on the engine. On the 2.4L engine in the 1996 Grand Am GT, it is located on the driver's side of the engine, just below the upper radiator hose.

3. Remove the upper radiator hose from the thermostat housing. If necessary, use a screwdriver to pry the hose loose.

4. Remove the bolts holding the thermostat housing in place using the 5/8-inch wrench.

5. Remove the old thermostat and gasket from the housing.

6. Clean the thermostat housing.

7. Apply a thin layer of sealant to the gasket. This will help create a seal and prevent leaks.

8. Install the new thermostat and gasket in the housing.

9. Replace the bolts and tighten them securely.

10. Using a funnel, carefully add new coolant to the overflow reservoir until the level reaches the full mark.

11. Start the engine and let it run for a few minutes. Check for leaks around the thermostat housing. If there are no leaks, close the hood and you're done.
