Steps to Remove the Engine:
1\. Disconnect Battery:
- Disconnect the battery's negative terminal to isolate the power supply.
2\. Remove Air Intake Components:
- Disconnect and remove the air intake system components, including the air filter housing, intake hose, and throttle body.
3\. Detach Coolant Hoses:
- Remove the radiator cap to relieve pressure.
- Disconnect and drain the coolant from the engine block and radiator.
- Unclamp and detach the coolant hoses connected to the engine.
4\. Remove Drive Belts:
- Use a wrench to loosen and remove the serpentine belt(s) from the pulleys.
- Unbolt and take off the belt tensioner(s).
5\. Remove Electrical Connections:
- Unplug the electrical connectors from the engine components, such as sensors, fuel injectors, and ignition coils.
- Remove the wire harness clips to gain more clearance.
6\. Disconnect Fuel System:
- Disconnect the fuel line(s) from the engine.
- Relieve any residual fuel pressure by depressing the fuel pressure relief valve.
7\. Disassemble the Exhaust System:
- Unbolt and remove the exhaust manifold from the engine block.
- Disconnect the exhaust pipe from the manifold.
8\. Support the Engine:
- Place a floor jack under the oil pan but do not lift it yet.
- Prepare an engine hoist; adjust the lifting chains or straps and attach them securely to the engine.
9\. Remove Engine Mounts:
- Remove the bolts securing the engine mounts to the chassis.
- Make sure the engine is fully supported by the floor jack.
10\. Release Transmission:
- Disengage the transmission. The transmission type (manual or automatic) may vary the procedure slightly:
For Manual Transmission:
- Pull the shift linkage out of the bracket by detaching the retaining clips.
- Disconnect the clutch cable (if applicable).
For Automatic Transmission:
- Disconnect the cooler lines from the transmission.
- Unbolt the torque converter from the flywheel.
11\. Raise and Remove Engine:
- Once all necessary connections and bolts have been disconnected, remove the engine mount bracket if possible.
- Ensure the hoist straps or chains are secure and evenly distributing the weight.
- Slowly lift the engine using the hoist.
- Keep raising the engine until it's clear from the engine bay and the transmission is separated.
12\. Remove Remaining Parts:
- Remove any components (such as the starter, alternator, or power steering pump) that did not come off with the engine.
13\. Clean Up:
- Thoroughly clean the engine compartment of any remaining oil, coolant, or other debris.
- Prepare the vehicle for the engine installation or other necessary repairs.
Note:
- The procedure outlined above is generic and may vary depending on the exact model and engine type of the 2001 Rav 4.
- For safety reasons, seek assistance from a qualified mechanic if you're not confident or lack experience with engine removal and installation.
