How do you set timing on hei engine?

To set the timing on an HEI engine, you will need the following tools:

* A timing light

* A wrench

* A screwdriver

1. Park your vehicle in a safe location and turn off the engine.

2. Locate the timing marks on the engine.

The timing marks are usually located on the front of the engine, near the crankshaft pulley. There will be two marks, one for Top Dead Center (TDC) and one for the specified timing advance.

3. Connect the timing light to the battery and the engine.

The red lead of the timing light should be connected to the positive terminal of the battery, and the black lead should be connected to the negative terminal. The inductive pickup of the timing light should be wrapped around the spark plug wire for the number one cylinder.

4. Start the engine and let it warm up to operating temperature.

5. Use the wrench to turn the distributor until the timing marks are aligned.

The TDC mark should be aligned with the pointer, and the specified timing advance mark should be aligned with the pointer.

6. Once the timing marks are aligned, tighten the distributor hold-down bolt.

7. Turn off the engine and disconnect the timing light.
