What is a hydroplane?

A hydroplane is a watercraft propelled by an engine-powered propeller that lifts the hull out of the water using a planing surface. The boat sits on the planing surface, skimming over the water's surface. Hydroplanes are designed for speed and are used for racing, sport, and some specialized commercial applications. They can be single or multi-hulled, with open or enclosed cabins, and come in various sizes and designs. High-speed hydroplanes can reach speeds exceeding 200 mph (322 km/h).
