Can diesel fuel replace heating oil?

Diesel fuel can be used as a substitute for heating fuel. Diesel fuel has a higher energy density per gallon than heating fuel, requiring fewer deliveries.

Diesel fuel costs slightly more per gallon. For this reason, heating fuel systems have been optimized for fuel efficiency and are not compatible with diesel fuel.

While diesel fuel can be used to substitute heating fuel, it is not a long-term solution.
