What is fuse used for?

A fuse is a sacrificial safety device to prevent damage due to excess current. For safety, fuses generally interrupt low resistance paths in conductors that could melt in an excessive, possibly dangerous current flow by acting as a sacrificial "weak link" which fails and breaks the circuit.
