Before you begin, make sure you have the necessary tools on hand. These include:
- Spark plug wrench
- Socket wrench set
- Pliers
- Wire brush
Step 2: Locate the spark plugs.
The spark plugs are located on the top of the engine. They are covered by black rubber boots.
Step 3: Disconnect the plug wires.
Use pliers to carefully pull the rubber boot off of each spark plug. Then, use a socket wrench to loosen and remove the spark plug wire from the spark plug.
Step 4: Remove the spark plugs.
Use a spark plug wrench to loosen and remove the spark plugs. Be careful not to drop the spark plugs.
Step 5: Inspect the spark plugs.
Inspect the old spark plugs for signs of wear or damage. The spark plug electrodes should be clean and sharp. If they are worn or damaged, they should be replaced.
Step 6: Gap the spark plugs.
Use a wire brush to clean the spark plug electrodes. Then, use a feeler gauge to gap the spark plugs to the proper specification. The spark plug gap for the Kawasaki Vulcan 900 Classic LT is 0.032-0.036 inches.
Step 7: Install the new spark plugs.
Screw in the new spark plugs by hand until they are snug. Then, use a spark plug wrench to tighten the spark plugs to the proper torque specification. The spark plug torque specification for the Kawasaki Vulcan 900 Classic LT is 18 ft-lbs.
Step 8: Reconnect the plug wires.
Reinstall the spark plug wires and connect them to the spark plugs. Be sure to snap the rubber boots into place.
Step 9: Test the engine.
Start the engine and let it run for a few minutes. Check the spark plugs to make sure they are firing properly. If the engine is running rough, you may need to adjust the spark plugs or replace them.
