1.Engage the parking brake.
2.Jack up the rear of the vehicle and support it on jack stands.
3.Remove the wheel cover (if applicable).
4.Remove the lug nuts and take off the wheel.
5.Locate the brake drum.
6.Spray penetrating fluid onto the brake drum adjustment hole of the backing plate.
7.Locate and remove the rubber plug or cap from the brake drum adjustment slot on the backing plate.
8.Insert a flathead screwdriver into the adjusting slot and turn it until the brake shoes retract (adjuster clicks).
9.Push down the lock tab on the bottom of the brake drum and turn the drum counterclockwise to remove it.
10.If the brake drum is stubborn, you may need to use a hammer to gently tap it around the circumference until it comes loose.
11.Once you have removed the brake drum you will need to pull out the brake assembly. This is best done by prying apart the brake shoes with a large screwdriver.
12.Take off the brake pads and replace them if they are worn out. You will also notice in this step that you will need to pull back on the adjusting bolt and release it.
13.Insert the brake assembly by pressing it into the slots on the brake backing plate.
14.Push down the lock tab on the bottom of the brake drum and turn it clockwise until it is seated properly.
15.Replace the wheel and lug nuts, then lower the vehicle.
16.Pump the brake pedal several times to seat the brake shoes against the drum.
17.Test drive the vehicle to ensure that the brakes are working properly.
Note: If you don't adjust the brake adjuster prior to removing the drum you will not be able to release the brake to fully remove the brake assembly.
