Check the Speed Sensor
1. Locate the speed sensor. It is usually located on the transmission or the rear differential.
2. Disconnect the electrical connector from the speed sensor.
3. Use a multimeter to check the sensor for continuity.
4. Replace the speed sensor if it is faulty.
Check the Instrument Cluster
1. Remove the instrument cluster from the car.
2. Inspect the speedometer for damage.
3. Check the electrical connections to the speedometer.
4. Clean the speedometer and contacts with an electrical contact cleaner.
5. Re-install the instrument cluster and test the speedometer.
Check the Wiring
1. Check the wiring harness between the speed sensor and the instrument cluster.
2. Inspect the wires for any cuts, breaks, or shorts.
3. Replace any damaged wires.
Replace the Speedometer
If all else fails, you may need to replace the speedometer.
- Purchase a new speedometer from a reputable auto parts store.
- Disconnect the battery before starting work.
- Remove the old speedometer by removing the screws holding it in place.
- Carefully disconnect the electrical connector from the back of the speedometer.
- Install the new speedometer in reverse order of removal.
- Reconnect the battery and test the speedometer.
