1. Using the transmission fluid dipstick: Most cars have a transmission fluid dipstick, which is usually located in the engine bay. To check the fluid level, pull out the dipstick, wipe it clean, then reinsert it into the transmission fluid reservoir. The fluid level should be between the "Full" and "Add" marks on the dipstick. If the fluid level is low, add enough transmission fluid to bring it up to the "Full" mark.
2. Using the overflow plug: Some cars do not have a transmission fluid dipstick, but they do have an overflow plug. To check the fluid level, remove the overflow plug and allow any excess fluid to drain out. The fluid level should be at the bottom of the overflow plug hole. If the fluid level is low, add enough transmission fluid to bring it up to the bottom of the overflow plug hole.
