1. Disconnect the negative terminal of the battery.
2. Using a screwdriver or ignition key, turn the lock cylinder to the ON position.
3. Insert a small flat-blade screwdriver into the slot on the side of the lock cylinder and depress the spring clip.
4. While depressing the spring clip, use a second screwdriver to push the lock cylinder out of the housing.
5. Disconnect the electrical connectors from the back of the ignition switch.
6. Remove the two screws that hold the ignition switch to the dashboard.
7. Pull the ignition switch out of the dashboard.
To install a new ignition switch, follow these steps in reverse order.
Here are some additional tips:
*Be careful not to damage the electrical connectors when disconnecting them.
*Make sure that the new ignition switch is in the OFF position before installing it.
* Tighten the screws that hold the ignition switch to the dashboard until they are snug.
Replacing the ignition switch on a 1961 Impala is a relatively simple task that can be completed in about 30 minutes.
