NOTE: Before beginning the fuel pump replacement, make sure you wear safety glasses, gloves and disconnect the battery
Tools and materials needed:
- Flat-head screwdriver
- Phillips-head screwdriver
- Socket wrench set
- Pliers
- New fuel pump
- Fuel line disconnect tool
- Gasoline-resistant gloves
1. Relieve the fuel pressure.
- Start the engine and let it run until it stalls.
- Turn the ignition key to the "OFF" position.
- Locate the fuel pressure regulator, which is usually located on the fuel rail near the engine.
- Use a flat-head screwdriver to depress the valve on the fuel pressure regulator.
- Fuel will spray out, so make sure to have a rag handy to catch it.
- Allow the fuel pressure to bleed off completely before proceeding.
2. Remove the fuel tank access cover.
- The fuel tank access cover is located under the vehicle, near the rear axle.
- Use a flat-head screwdriver to pry off the cover.
3. Disconnect the fuel lines.
- Use the fuel line disconnect tool to disconnect the fuel lines from the fuel pump.
- Be careful not to spill any fuel.
4. Remove the fuel pump assembly.
- Remove the bolts that secure the fuel pump assembly to the fuel tank.
- Carefully remove the fuel pump assembly from the tank.
5. Install the new fuel pump.
- Place the new fuel pump assembly into the fuel tank.
- Secure the fuel pump assembly with the bolts you removed earlier.
6. Connect the fuel lines.
- Use the fuel line disconnect tool to connect the fuel lines to the fuel pump.
- Make sure the lines are properly connected and secured.
7. Install the fuel tank access cover.
- Replace the fuel tank access cover and secure it with the screws you removed earlier.
8. Start the engine and check for leaks.
- Start the engine and let it run for a few minutes.
- Check for any leaks around the fuel pump and fuel lines.
- If there are no leaks, the fuel pump replacement is complete.
